Wildflowers with the words wildlife triangle written over the top

The Elmington Wildlife Triangle is an area of the estate which historically had been unloved and used for fly-tipping.  Located on Brisbane Street opposite Drinkwater House, it had become an eyesore for the residents who could see it directly from their homes and a health hazard for the estate as a whole.  Our aim here was to produce an area that would not only be welcoming to humans, but equally as appealing to a variety of wildlife.
We started by clearing the area of rubbish and, as the photos below show, went to quite extreme lengths to cut back the trees that had been left to overgrow the fenced-off area behind.  Following this, we planted dozens of whips around the rear perimeter - including raspberries and hawthorn.

Next, we arranged a no-mow agreement with Southwark Council for the area, as longer grass would entice various types of wildlife such as insects and foxes to use the Wildlife Triangle.  Then, we installed bat and bird boxes to the wall and fence.  Using woodchip made from trees which had been felled locally, we created a winding path through the area and made seating from the stumps.  Residents can often be seen taking a quiet moment or having a picnic here.  Finally, local children made a bug hotel out of items sourced at the Wildlife Triangle and Benhill Road Nature Garden, which we hung on the fence at the rear.  Then we let Mother Nature do the rest and what she has done has been nothing short of amazing!
